The Vine That Ate The South Is Here! Dreaded Invasive Kudzu Vine Has Been Found In Ontario (Sep 22, 2009)
Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters.
Kudzu has been discovered for the first time in Canada, in Ontario. The Ontario Invasive Plant Council has issued a news release and fact sheet: Kudzu Vine: One of Ontario’s Most Un-Wanted Plant Species (2009; PDF | 764 KB). Unlike in the U.S., kudzu is not a controlled or restricted species in Canada, and should not be planted. The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources have set up a toll-free number, the Invading Species Hotline 1-800-563-7711 and www.invadingspecies.com to obtain information and report sightings of kudzu vine and other invasive species.

Canadian Scientists Uncover Alarming Invasion of Round Goby into Great Lakes Tributaries: Impact on Endangered Fishes Likely to Be Serious (Aug 11, 2009)
University of Toronto.
A team of scientists from the University of Toronto, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and the University of Guelph has identified a drastic invasion of round goby into many Great Lakes tributaries. A number of the affected areas are known as "species-at-risk" hot spots and the invasion poses many potential threats for native species of fish and mussels. The results of the study are published in Biological Invasions. The public can assist by reporting the capture of round goby to the Ontario Federation of Anglers & Hunters Invading Species Awareness Program.

Australia's Biodiversity - Impacts of Climate Change (Aug 17, 2009)
Australian Government. Department of Climate Change.
New report released -- Australia's Biodiversity and Climate Change: A strategic assessment of the vulnerability of Australia's’s biodiversity to climate change (PDF | 3 MB). The report provids more compelling evidence of the need to protect Australia's natural environment for future generations -- not only from climate change, but from such other stressors as vegetation clearing and the impact of invasive species (see Climate change and invasive species (PDF | 296 KB).

University of Leicester Research Paves Way for First Ever Use in Europe of an Insect to Fight Invasive Plant Species (Jul 30, 2009)
University of Leicester.
Researchers have extensively tested the use of the insect, a psyllid species Aphalara itadori, as a control for Japanese Knotweed. The United Kingdom Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Welsh Assembly Government are seeking views on the possible release of the insect at Consultation on the Possible Release of a Biocontrol Agent to Control Japanese Knotweed. The closing date for the consultation is Oct 19, 2009. If approved, this would be the first use of a non-native insect species to control a plant species in the UK and Europe.

Extinction Crisis Looms in Oceania: Landmark Study (Jul 29, 2009)
University of New South Wales.
The study, in Conservation Biology, is the first comprehensive review of more than 24,000 scientific publications related to conservation in the Oceanic region. The authors identified six major threatening processes (habitat loss and degradation, invasive species, climate change, overexploitation, pollution, and wildlife disease) and developed a set of conservation policies for each threat.

Kingsford, R.T., Watson, J.E.M., Lundquist, C.J., Ventner, O., Hughes, L. Johnston, E.L. et al. Major conservation policy issues for biodiversity in Oceania (PDF | 298 KB) Conservation Biology 23 (4): 834-840.
