Secretary Salazar Announces New Members of Invasive Species Advisory Committee (Jan 17, 2013)
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar has appointed 14 new members to the Invasive Species Advisory Committee, which provides advice and recommendations to the National Invasive Species Council. The next ISAC Meeting will be held Mar 7-8, 2013 in Arlington, Virginia.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Announces $5.7 Million in State Wildlife Grants to Help Imperiled Species (Aug 23, 2012)
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service today announced that more than $5.7 million in grants will be awarded to seven state fish and wildlife agencies to help conserve and recover imperiled species and habitats through the State Wildlife Grants Competitive Program. This federal funding will be matched by more than $4.6 million in non-federal funds provided by states and their partners.

Brown-Sponsored Legislation To Stop Asian Carp Passes Congress: Stop Invasive Species Act, Cosponsored by Sen. Brown, Now Poised to Become Law; Bill Requires Action on Permanent Solutions to Stop Asian Carp (Jun 29, 2012)
Bipartisan legislation to stop Asian carp from destroying the Great Lakes' ecosystem has passed both houses of Congress and is now poised to become law. The Stop Invasive Species Act, of which Brown was an original cosponsor, would require the expedited creation of a plan to block Asian carp from entering the Great Lakes through a number of rivers and tributaries across the Great Lakes region.

United States, Canadian Forest Officials Hold Forest Health Summit: Officials join to discuss common land threats, develop common strategies (Jun 28, 2012)
U.S. Forest Service and Canadian Forest Service of Natural Resources Canada officials convened here for the first forest health summit between the two countries to discuss issues of common concern such as invasive species. "The borders that separate the United States and Canada don't segregate threats to our natural resources," said U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. "The countries share common environmental concerns. It is critical that we continue to collaborate and address current and future land management challenges as partners."

Congress Approves $300 Million for Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (Dec 19, 2011)
The approved funding keeps the ball rolling for the historic levels of federal investment in Great Lakes cleanup through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. The Initiative was kicked off in 2010 with $475 million in restoration funds aimed at cleaning up toxic hot spots, curbing runoff pollution, fighting invasive species, and restoring habitat. 2011 saw a decrease in funding from Congress to just under $300 million.

Innovative Way to Keep Bollworms Out of Cotton Fields (Dec 28, 2010)
USDA. Agricultural Research Service.
ARS scientists are part of a team that's found an innovative way to keep pink bollworms out of cotton fields in the Southwest and reduce both insecticide spraying and the threat of resistance to genetically modified crops. Their strategy -- combining the use of Bt cotton with the release of a sterile version of the voracious pest.

Obama Administration Releases 2011 Asian Carp Control Strategy Framework (Dec 16, 2010)

The Obama Administration announced a series of new measures to protect the Great Lakes from Asian carp, building on the unprecedented proactive plan to prevent this invasive species from developing self-sustaining populations in the Great Lakes that the Administration established in Feb 2010. The 2011 Asian Carp Control Strategy Framework (Dec 2010; PDF | 5.7 MB) adds 13 new initiatives to the comprehensive effort to combat Asian carp, including expanding eDNA testing capacity and developing cutting-edge biological controls and monitoring technology, among other measures.

Keystone Hatcheries Pleads Guilty to Lacey Act Violation (Nov 23, 2010)
DOI. FWS. Midwest Region.
Keystone Hatcheries violated the Lacey Act for illegally transporting fish into Indiana after a documented outbreak of Whirling Disease at their facility. In addition to the guilty plea, KSH has agreed to pay $75,000 for the Lacey Act violation, of which, $35,000 will go to the State of Indiana to monitor watersheds where KSH knowingly stocked fish and look for potential WD outbreaks. The remaining $40,000 will be paid to the Lacey Act Reward Fund.

U.S. Department of Transportation Announces $4 Million Investment to Combat Invasive Species in Great Lakes (Nov 22, 2010)
DOT. Maritime Administration.
The Maritime Administration is funding a $4 million project to help prevent the spread of invasive aquatic species found in cargo ships in the Great Lakes. The funding is part of the Obama Administration's Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, the largest federal investment in the Great Lakes in 20 years.
