Deadly Bat Disease Confirmed in Georgia (Mar 12, 2013)
White-nose syndrome which is the disease that has killed millions of bats in the eastern U.S. has been confirmed for the first time in Georgia. White-nose syndrome has been recently confirmed in South Carolina and Illinois.

White-Nose Syndrome Confirmed in Park Bats (Jan 16, 2013)
Officials have confirmed the presence of a deadly bat fungus, white-nose syndrome, in Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. The fungus has already killed millions of bats across the Northeast and in the Midwest.

State Officials Confirm Emerald Ash Borer Detected in Massachusetts for First Time (Sep 12, 2012)
Officials with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Department of Agricultural Resources have announced that the emerald ash borer has been detected in Massachusetts. The destructive beetle was detected in the western Massachusetts Town of Dalton on August 31, 2012, and was confirmed by federal officials on September 6. Massachusetts is the 18th state in the country to detect EAB.

Chinese Mitten Crab Found in Connecticut Waters (Aug 3, 2012)
A Chinese mitten crab was recently found in Connecticut waters. This is the first confirmed report of this highly invasive crab in Connecticut waters. In late June, the crab was collected from the Mianus Pond fishway on the Mianus River. Individuals finding a crab that they suspect to be a Chinese mitten crab should keep the crab on ice or freeze it (please do not release the crab), note the exact location it was found and report it to officials.

Emerald Ash Borer Found in Prospect and Naugatuck, Connecticut (Jul 20, 2012)
The Emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis) found in Prospect, CT has been confirmed by federal regulatory officials. This is the first record of this pest in Connecticut, which is added to 15 other states where infestations have been detected.

Citrus Disease Huanglongbing Detected in Hacienda Heights Area of Los Angeles County (Mar 30, 2012)
APHIS has confirmed the presence of citrus greening, also referred to as Huanglongbing, in an Asian citrus psyllid sample and plant tissue samples collected from a lemon/pummelo tree in a residential neighborhood in Hacienda Heights, Los Angeles County, California. This is the first confirmation of the disease in California. APHIS is working closely with the California Department of Food and Agriculture, County Agricultural Commissioners, and the California citrus industry to plan and implement communication, response, and regulatory activities in the affected area. CDFA collected the samples during ongoing citrus surveys conducted as part of the cooperative Citrus Health Response Program. California Department of Food and Agriculture has set up a hot line for residents who suspect they may have infected trees - 800-491-1899.

Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Identifies Giant African Land Snails in Miami-Dade County (Sep 15, 2011)
The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has positively identified a population of Giant African land snails in Miami-Dade County. The Giant African land snail is one of the most damaging snails in the world because they consume at least 500 different types of plants, can cause structural damage to plaster and stucco, and can carry a parasitic nematode that can lead to meningitis in humans. Anyone who believes they may have seen a Giant African land snail or signs of its presence should call FDACS toll-free at 888-397-1517 to make arrangements to have the snail collected.

First Capture of Spotted Wing Drosophila: Deploy and check traps now to enable early detection of this pest (Jul 15, 2011)
The first capture of spotted wing Drosophila for 2011 in Michigan has been confirmed. This is a new invasive insect pest of several tree and small fruit crops grown in this region, and it was first trapped in this state in late 2010. It was confirmed this week that we have caught this pest in a trap that was collected on Jul 7 in Allegan County, south of Grand Rapids, Michigan. DEP Reports Didymo Discovered in the West Branch Farmington River: First Confirmation of this Invasive Species in Connecticut (Mar 29, 2011)
The highly invasive freshwater alga, Didymosphenia geminata, known as "didymo", has been discovered in the West Branch Farmington River, a very popular trout stream in northwestern Connecticut.

Chronic Wasting Disease Found In A White-Tailed Deer In Maryland (Feb 10, 2011)
Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
A white-tailed deer harvested in Maryland has tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease . Chronic Wasting Disease is a transmissible neurological disease of deer and elk that produces small lesions in brains of infected animals. Maryland joins 20 other states and Canadian provinces with CWD documented in deer, elk or moose.
