New Invaders of the Northwest (Jun 2010) - FHTET-2009-04
The purpose of this guide is to help land users recognize new invasive plants early on, before they become large and expensive problems. This hands-on field guide focuses on 62 newly invasive species not yet widely distributed throughout the Northwest. Each species is highlighted with multiple photos and descriptions emphasizing key identification traits, typical habitat, current distribution, and ways to distinguish it from look-alike species. The guide includes weed hotline numbers for those states with such programs in place, so that new infestations can be reported and treated immediately. Note: Print copy may be available from FHTET, contact Lisa Cress at lcress@fs.fed.us (1 copy per request).

Invasive Species, Climate Change and Ecosystem-Based Adaptation: Addressing Multiple Drivers of Global Change (Sep 2010; PDF | 1.3 MB)
Global Invasive Species Programme.
Separately, climate change and invasive species are two of the greatest threats to biodiversity and the ecosystem services upon which humanity relies. Combined their impacts will be compounded, potentially resulting in negative feedback loops with increasingly dire consequences. This publication from GISP highlights recent efforts to identify the underlying dynamics linking these two global change drivers and the optimal responses for the policy-making and research communities.

Invasive Saltcedar and Russian Olive Trees Consume Similar Amounts of Water as Native Cottonwoods and Willows, Wildlife Effects Mixed (Apr 28, 2010)
DOI. USGS. Fort Collins Science Center.
According to the report, Saltcedar and Russian Olive Control Demonstration Act Science Assessment, non-native saltcedar and Russian olive trees that have spread along streams and water bodies in the West may not be as detrimental to wildlife and water availability as believed. Scientists conducted a review of the scientific literature to assess the existing state of the science on the distribution and spread, water consumption, and control methods for saltcedar (also called tamarisk) and Russian olive. One notable finding is that native trees such as cottonwoods and willows along western rivers typically consume as much water as non-native saltcedar and Russian olive.

Global Indicators of Biological Invasion: Species Numbers, Biodiversity Impact and Policy Responses (Jan 2010) - Abstract / Press Release - Impact of Nature's Invading Aliens Measured for First Time (Jan 22, 2010)
International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Invasive alien species, ranging from disease and plants, to rats and goats, are one of the top three threats to life on this planet, according to a new publication coordinated by the Global Invasive Species Programme, of which IUCN is a partner. The authors looked at 57 countries and found that, on average, there are 50 non-indigenous species per country which have a negative impact on biodiversity.
