CalWeedMapper
CalWeedMapper is a new Web site for mapping invasive plant spread and planning regional management in California. Users generate a report for their region that synthesizes information into three types of strategic opportunities: surveillance, eradication and containment. Land managers can use these reports to prioritize their invasive plant management, to coordinate at the landscape level (county or larger) and to justify funding requests. For some species, CalWeedMapper also provides maps of suitable range that show where a plant might be able to grow in the future. The system was developed by the California Invasive Plant Council and is designed to stay current by allowing users to edit data.

The Forest Inventory and Analysis program of the USDA Forest Service has created a series of downloadable invasive plant distribution maps for its Northern Region (includes 24 states). The distributions on these maps portray the spatial distribution of the plants based on observations from the FIA program. Check out our Plant Species Profiles which now includes this data.

Online Native Plant Center Helps Chesapeake Bay (Jun 13, 2011)
A new tool to help citizens in the Chesapeake Bay watershed select native plants is now available. Users of the portal, Native Plant Center can search for native plants by name, plant type, sun exposure, soil texture and moisture, and even find native plants with the same shape, color, size or other characteristics as some of their favorite non-native plants. The site also includes a geo-locator feature to identify plants suited to a user's specific location. For more information, see the Chesapeake Bay Field Office.

New Invaders of the Northwest (Jun 2010) - FHTET-2009-04
The purpose of this guide is to help land users recognize new invasive plants early on, before they become large and expensive problems. This hands-on field guide focuses on 62 newly invasive species not yet widely distributed throughout the Northwest. Each species is highlighted with multiple photos and descriptions emphasizing key identification traits, typical habitat, current distribution, and ways to distinguish it from look-alike species. The guide includes weed hotline numbers for those states with such programs in place, so that new infestations can be reported and treated immediately. Note: Print copy may be available from FHTET, contact Lisa Cress at lcress@fs.fed.us (1 copy per request).

Citizen Scientist Program's Success Highlighted (Jun 1, 2011)
A program that harnesses volunteers throughout Texas to collect conservation data has been highlighted as a model citizen scientist program in the June issue of the journal Bioscience. More than 1,100 Texans have been trained by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center's Invaders of Texas Citizen Scientists Program to identify and report non-native invasive plants throughout the state. These citizen scientists have logged more than 12,000 observations of invasive plants on a publicly accessible online database that governmental agencies and resource managers can use to monitor the plants that compete with native plants.
