Climate Change Invites Alien Invaders - Is Canada Ready? (Jan 24, 2012)
A comprehensive multi-disciplinary synthesis published in Environmental Reviews reveals the urgent need for further investigation and policy development to address significant environmental, social and economic impacts of invasive alien species and climate change.

The Doctor is In (Feb 8, 2012)
USDA and CABI's Plantwise Initiative have formed a recent partnership. In collaboration with local organizations, Plantwise has formed a network of 182 clinics across 19 countries to increase food security by decreasing crop losses. Through the partnership, USDA research and information will be electronically transferred to the Plantwise global knowledge bank so that the "plant doctors" at these clinics will have easier access to in order to help farmers in far off places diagnose and control the plant pests and diseases affecting their fields.

See CABI's press release for more information -- New Global Plant Health Resource to Improve Food Security (Jul 26, 2011)
For the first time ever, distribution maps, diagnostic support and treatment advice for thousands of the world's most damaging pests and diseases of plants and crops are being made available free of charge on the Plantwise site.

USDA and Russian Scientists Develop High-Tech Crop Map (Mar 10, 2011)
USDA. Agricultural Research Service.
AgroAtlas is a new interactive website that shows the geographic distributions of 100 crops; 640 species of crop diseases, pests, and weeds; and 560 wild crop relatives growing in Russia and neighboring countries. Downloadable maps and geographic information system software are also available, allowing layering of data, for example, relating major wheat production areas to concentrations of Russian wheat aphids. AgroAtlas also has the potential to aid in the detection and identification of insect pests, pathogens or weeds that have entered -- or could enter -- the U.S. from Russia or neighboring countries. Read more about this research in the article ARS and Russian Scientists Develop "AgroAtlas" With Worldwide Benefits, published in the Mar 2011 issue of Agricultural Research.

2011 International Year of Forests (Jan 24, 2011)
International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The United Nations General Assembly declared 2011 as the International Year of Forests to raise awareness on sustainable management, conservation and sustainable development of all types of forests. Forests cover 31% of total land area and are home to 80% of the world's terrestrial biodiversity. The IUCN Invasive Species Specialist Group will celebrate the International Year of Forests by focusing on raising awareness and disseminating information on the impacts of invasive species -- forests pests and diseases.

Globalization Burdens Future Generations with Biological Invasions (Dec 20, 2010)
Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research.
A new study on biological invasions based on extensive data of alien species from 10 taxonomic groups and 28 European countries has shown that patterns of established alien species richness are more related to historical levels of socio-economic drivers than to contemporary ones. An international group of 16 researchers reported the new findings in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America article Socioeconomic legacy yields an invasion debt. The researchers found that the frequent delay between the first introduction of a species in a new territory and its establishment and spread suggest that invasions triggered by current economic behavior will possibly take a long time to become fully realized, causing an "invasion debt". The publication resulted from the three-year project DAISIE (Delivering Alien Invasive Inventory for Europe, funded by European Union within its 6th Framework Programme.

Noxious Weed Threatens the Biggest Wildlife Migration on the Planet (Nov 24, 2010)
International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The Serengeti - Masai Mara ecosystem in Africa, which hosts the largest wildlife migration known to man, is under attack from a noxious weed from Central America, commonly known as feverfew (Parthenium hysterophorus). The fast growing weed which has the ability to produce 10,000-25,000 seeds produces chemicals which inhibit the growth of other plants. It is also toxic, which means that animals will not eat it unless they are starving or stressed, with fatal consequences. If left unchecked it could threaten the continued migration of millions of animals across the plains every year, including 1.5 million wildebeest, 500,000 Thomson’s gazelle and 200,000 zebra.

Cost of Invasive Non-native Species - Early Eradication Lessens Impact (Dec 15, 2010)
Scottish Goverment.
The financial cost of non-native species has been published in a new report. "The Economic Cost of Invasive Non-Native Species to the British Economy" suggests that invasive species cost 1.7 billion pounds every year. The research was conducted by the international scientific organization CABI for the Scottish Government, Defra and the Welsh Assembly Government and breaks down the effect on each country. It indicates that the economic cost of INNS can be wide ranging and can result in the loss of crops, ecosystems and livelihoods. The cost to the agriculture and horticulture sector alone is estimated to be 1 billion pounds across Britain. See Great Britain Non-native Species Secretariat - Reports for the full report and supporting document.
