Potato Late Blight Still a Threat to Global Food Security (Dec 28, 2012)
A study by scientists has warned the organism responsible for the Irish potato famine is still a major threat. The team said the results showed the need for strategies to protect potatoes from disease. Phytophtora infestans is a fungus like organism that causes late blight in potatoes. It infects leaves, stems and tubers and can cause devastating crop losses.

Thousand Cankers Disease Survey Guidelines Now Available (May 2012) In cooperation with the U.S. Forest Service, APHIS Plant Protection and Quarantine has updated the Thousand Cankers Disease Survey Guidelines for 2012 (Apr 2012). The main change to the guidelines from last year is the addition of instructions on how to use the lure that has been developed for walnut twig beetle. TCD results from the combined activity of Geosmithia morbida fungus and the walnut twig beetle (WTB, Pityophthorus juglandis).

Spinach Genes May Stop Deadly Citrus Disease (Mar 26, 2012) Citrus growers worldwide who currently have no cure for a devastating, tree-killing disease may soon find relief from an unlikely source -- spinach. Researchers have transferred two genes from spinach into citrus trees, apparently providing resistance to citrus greening disease, or Huanglongbing, often referred to as HLB.
