Spinach Genes May Stop Deadly Citrus Disease (Mar 26, 2012)
Citrus growers worldwide who currently have no cure for a devastating, tree-killing disease may soon find relief from an unlikely source -- spinach. Researchers have transferred two genes from spinach into citrus trees, apparently providing resistance to citrus greening disease, or Huanglongbing, often referred to as HLB.

National Interagency Team Mobilizing To Tackle White-Nose Syndrome of Bats (2011)
Northern Research Station scientists are helping unravel the mysteries of white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease devastating bat populations in eastern North America. Bats are a vital component of many ecosystems, eating billions of insects, including mosquitos and crop pests. Many bat species could be facing extinction due to the rapid spread of this cold-loving fungus, Geomyces destructans, previously unknown to science. Several bat species at risk from WNS are federally designated endangered species, including the Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis), gray bat (Myotis grisescens), and Virginia big-eared bat (Corynorhinus townsendii virginianus).

White-Nose Syndrome Devasting Bat Colonies (Winter 2011)
Animal Welfare Institute. AWI Quarterly.
White-Nose Syndrome has killed at least one million bats - and probably far more than that - as it has raced across the eastern United States since appearing in a single New York cave in the winter of 2006.

Comprehensive Report on Sudden Oak Death: 10-year cooperative research effort provides basis for containment (Dec 23, 2010)
USDA. FS. Pacific Southwest Research Station.
Synthesizing more than 10 years of cooperative research on the exotic invasive, quarantine sudden oak death pathogen, the USDA Forest Service's Pacific Southwest Research Station recently published "Sudden Oak Death and Phytophthora ramorum: A Summary of the Literature." This 181-page comprehensive report covers a wide range of topics, including a history of sudden oak death, identification and distribution of the disease, epidemiology and modeling, management and control, and economic and environmental impacts.

Species Profile -- Thousand Cankers Black Walnut Disease
USDA. NAL. National Invasive Species Information Center.
Thousand cankers black walnut disease has produced widespread death of black walnuts in many western states during the past decade. Other species of walnut such as Arizona walnut, English walnut, and California walnut have all shown varying degrees of susceptibility to this fungus. Initial symptoms involve a yellowing and thinning of the upper crown, which progresses to include death of progressively larger branches. During the final stages large areas of foliage may rapidly wilt. Trees often are killed within three years after initial symptoms are noted.

* See our Microbes section for more species profiles.

Psyllid Identification Key to Area-wide Control of Citrus Greening Spread (Nov 3, 2010)
USDA. Agricultural Research Service.
With help from colleagues in Texas and Florida, U.S.. Department of Agriculture scientist has identified at least six psyllid species present in south Texas citrus groves. Some are native to the Rio Grande Valley, but others, like the Asian citrus psyllid, are not. The scientists are examining the life cycles of the six species to determine which of them can spread Huanglongbing. This will help scientists target certain species for control measures. The disease was first detected in Florida in 2005 and now poses a significant threat to the entire U.S. citrus industry. For more information on the research, see the article Citrus Greening? Not If These Scientists Can Help It!, published in the Nov/Dec 2010 issue of Agricultural Research magazine.
