Stop Brown Mamorated Stink Bug
This initiative includes more than 50 researchers from 10 institutions across the U.S. working together on this project team. The team of researchers has mobilized to form a defense against the invasive pest brown marmorated stink bug. The project team is working to find management solutions for growers, seeking strategies that will protect our food, our environment, and our farms.

Species Profile -- Burmese Python
Burmese pythons are native to Southeast Asia and were imported to the U.S. for the pet trade. Wild populations became established in 2000 in Florida from animals that escaped or were intentionally released. Burmese pythons prey on native species and may also compete with threatened native species.

APHIS Establishes Regulated Areas in Florida for Giant African Snail (Apr 13, 2012)

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is issuing a Federal Order, effective immediately, which establishes regulated areas in Miami-Dade County in Florida for the giant African snail.

On Sep 9, 2011, APHIS confirmed the detection of GAS, Lissachatina fulica, in a residential area of Miami, Florida. Since the initial detection, APHIS has actively worked with the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to conduct survey, regulatory, control, and outreach activities. While residential areas have been affected, to date, extensive surveys of nurseries and agricultural productions facilities within the infested areas have been negative for GAS.

The Federal Order outlines the safeguarding measures required for the interstate movement of regulated articles from the areas regulated for GAS. The requirements in the State’s interior quarantine for GAS are parallel to this Federal Order. GAS is one of the most damaging snails in the world because it is known to consume at least 500 different plants including vegetables, fruits, and ornamental crops.

New Pheromone Traps Lure Asian Longhorned Beetles out of Hiding (Winter 2012)
Entomologists from the U.S. Forest Service's Northern Research Station and Pennsylvania State University have developed a pheromone trap that lures Asian long-horned beetles out of hiding. Although it is not a treatment that can kill lots of beetles, this new trap is a major step forward in being able to detect the beetle. It may be used for finding outliers and hidden infestations in quarantine zones and standing sentry in high-risk areas.

Forest Fungus Factory (May 5, 2011)
Hemlock is the third most common tree species in Vermont. But it soon may drop off the list, going the way of the now-vanished chestnut and elm due to the hemlock wooly adelgid. The adelgid recently arrived in southern Vermont. Scientists have been developing a novel method of putting an insect-killing fungus, lecanicillium muscarium, to work protecting hemlock trees. Field trials reduced the growth rate of adelgid by fifty percent.

Historical Gypsy Moth Publications
This collection of publications in NAL's Digital Repository provides access to and addresses a number of topics concerning the gypsy and the related brown-tail moths, from biological control methods to tree banding to quarantine practices. The bulk of the documents were published from 1891 to 1923 by various agencies in the area of the initial infestation, including the State Board of Agriculture for Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island, but also include some more modern USDA publications.
