New Pheromone Traps Lure Asian Longhorned Beetles out of Hiding (Winter 2012)
Entomologists from the U.S. Forest Service's Northern Research Station and Pennsylvania State University have developed a pheromone trap that lures Asian long-horned beetles out of hiding. Although it is not a treatment that can kill lots of beetles, this new trap is a major step forward in being able to detect the beetle. It may be used for finding outliers and hidden infestations in quarantine zones and standing sentry in high-risk areas.

Study Finds that Local Government, Home Owners Are Paying for Damages Caused by Non-native Forest Insects (Sep 9, 2011)
Non-native, wood-boring insects such as the emerald ash borer and the Asian longhorned beetle are costing an estimated $1.7 billion in local government expenditures and approximately $830 million in lost residential property values every year, according to study by a research team that included scientists with the U.S. Forest Service, Northern Research Station. This study provides the most comprehensive estimates of the costs of non-native forest insects that are currently available for the U.S.

Forest Fungus Factory (May 5, 2011)
Hemlock is the third most common tree species in Vermont. But it soon may drop off the list, going the way of the now-vanished chestnut and elm due to the hemlock wooly adelgid. The adelgid recently arrived in southern Vermont. Scientists have been developing a novel method of putting an insect-killing fungus, lecanicillium muscarium, to work protecting hemlock trees. Field trials reduced the growth rate of adelgid by fifty percent.

Brown Marmorated Stink Bug Causes $37 Million In Losses To Mid-Atlantic Apple Growers (Apr 14, 2011)
Mid-Atlantic apple growers lost $37 million last year from damage caused by the brown marmorated stink bug to the 2010 apple crop, according to an estimate released by the U.S. Apple Association. The damage estimate was developed at the request of federal scientists researching ways to control the newly invasive pest.

Historical Gypsy Moth Publications
This collection of publications in NAL's Digital Repository provides access to and addresses a number of topics concerning the gypsy and the related brown-tail moths, from biological control methods to tree banding to quarantine practices. The bulk of the documents were published from 1891 to 1923 by various agencies in the area of the initial infestation, including the State Board of Agriculture for Massachusetts, New York, and Rhode Island, but also include some more modern USDA publications.

USDA Revises Heat Treatment Schedule for Emerald Ash Borer (Jan 19, 2011)
USDA. Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service.
APHIS announced a revision to the heat treatment schedule for ash logs and all hardwood firewood moving interstate from an emerald ash borer quarantined area. The new treatment schedule prevents the introduction or dissemination of EAB within the U.S. and provides flexibility to industry. This revision was published in the Jan 19, 2011 Federal Register, Notice of Decision to Revise a Heat Treatment Schedule for Emerald Ash Borer.

Species Profile -- Brown Marmorated Stink Bug
USDA. NAL. National Invasive Species Information Center.
The brown marmorated stink bug is an insect native to southeast Asia. In addition to being annoying, the pest is a serious concern because it feeds on field crops like soybeans and a number of vegetable crops and ornamentals. It can also attack crops that produce fruit, like peaches, cherries, pears and crabapples. The insect is very mobile, adaptable to different ecosytems and restistant to most common pesticides.
