MERC Invasive Species Work Featured on NPR (Jul 15, 2009)
University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science. Chesapeake Biological Laboratory.
A scientist working with the Maritime Environmental Resource Center (MERC) on invasive species control, has had his group's efforts featured in an National Public Radio's All Things Considered story. The scientists have focused on controlling the plant and animal life that may invade the Chesapeake Bay's waters by way of an inbound ship's ballast water.

Species Profile -- Clubbed Tunicate
USDA. NAL. National Invasive Species Information Center.
Clubbed tunicates, also known as sea squirts, are siphon-feeding marine animals that have a heart, stomach and intestines. They have no known predators and can quickly blanket the hull of boats, pilings and other hard surfaces, out-competing or suffocating other sea life, including clams, mussels and oysters. As tunicates continue to multiply, they pose a serious threat to our multi-million dollar shellfish aquaculture industry.

Chinese Mitten Crab Update U.S. Atlantic Coast Bays & Rivers (PDF | 50 KB) (Apr 2009)
Smithsonian Environmental Research Center.
Live Chinese Mitten Crabs (Eriocheir sinensis) have been found in Chesapeake Bay (2005-2007), Delaware Bay (2007), Hudson River (2007-2009), and in New Jersey (2008-2009). To date, there have been forty-four mitten crabs confirmed in the eastern United States. The most recent crabs were captured in New Jersey and New York. In New Jersey, a mitten crab was found in the Shrewsbury River at Dominick F. Santelle Park (April 18, 2009).

To report a mitten crab or for more information please call the mitten crab hotline or e-mail:

Species Profile -- Alligatorweed
USDA. NAL. National Invasive Species Information Center.
Alligatorweed is a perennial aquatic weed introduced to the southern U.S. from South America in the early 1880's from ballast water. Alligatorweed infestations blocked rivers, canals, and ditches across the South, often causing severe flooding. Alligatorweed forms dense mats that crowd out native species and impede recreational activities such as boating, swimming, and fishing.

Vessel Discharges Require Permit (Dec 18, 2008)
Environmental Protection Agency.
A new general permit will reduce releases of 26 types of discharges from vessels operating in U.S. waters. Beginning Dec 19, approximately 61,000 domestically flagged commercial vessels and 8,000 foreign flagged vessels will need to comply with the Final Vessel General Permit. As a result of a court ruling, vessel owners and operators who have previously been exempt from Clean Water Act requirements for the last 35 years will now require a permit starting Dec 19. The permit covers non-recreational vessels 79 feet in length or longer, such as cruise ships or oil and cargo tankers, but excludes fishing vessels of any length, unless they discharge ballast water.

Twenty Years of the Zebra Mussel
Great Lakes United.
The first zebra mussels in the Great Lakes were identified in 1988. Since this initial discovery, the mollusk has spread to all corners of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River Ecosystem, and pushing south to the Mississippi Delta and west to places like California and Nevada. It has wreaked havoc on municipal and industrial water infrastructure, piled up on beaches, and devastated natural wildlife populations.

Species Profile -- Didymo
USDA. NAL. National Invasive Species Information Center.
Didymo also known as rock snot, is a freshwater single-celled alga. It is found in streams and rivers in much of North America. Didymo increasingly poses a threat to aquatic ecosystems because it forms extensive mats on stream beds.

Species Profile -- Water Lettuce
USDA. NAL. National Invasive Species Information Center.
Water lettuce is an invasive weed found in many areas of the southern United States. Water lettuce can form dense carpets of vegetation on the water surface, blocking sunlight from reaching submerged plants and reducing the oxygen exchange at the water’s surface. It can also grow to form surface mats impenetrable to boats, swimmers and waterfowl.

Species Profile -- Spiny Water Flea
USDA. NAL. National Invasive Species Information Center.
Spiny water fleas are small predacious crustaceans that threaten aquatic ecosystems and fishing by competing with native fish for food and fouling gear. Water flea introductions have decreased growth or survival rates for many fish, particularly young plankton feeders.
