A
Deer Mistake: The Victorian Government's Proposal
to Promote Recreational Deer Hunting on Farms
(Dec 11, 2008; PDF | 1.9 MB) and Press
Release - Deer Hunting Scheme Will Cost us Dear
(Dec 12, 2008; PDF | 343 KB)
Invasive Species Council Australia.
The Invasive Species Council Australia released a report critiquing
a proposal by the Victorian government to promote
deer hunting on private properties for claimed environmental benefits.
Feral deer are a very serious environmental problem in Victoria,
and Sambar have recently been listed as a potential threatening process.
But evidence from around the world shows that hunting for sport rarely
works as a method of pest control. By promoting
hunting, governments can even worsen pest problems.
