Avian Influenza (AI) -- A Threat to U.S. Poultry

Worldwide, there are many strains of avian influenza (AI) virus that can cause varying amounts of clinical illness in poultry. AI viruses can infect chickens, turkeys, pheasants, quail, ducks, geese, and guinea fowl as well as wide variety of other bird. Migratory waterfowl have proved to be a natural reservoir for AI viruses.

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1

To date, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 has not been detected in North America. This particularly virulent strain of Avian Influenza emerged in Asia in 2003 and has been recently detected in Turkey, Romania, and parts of Europe. H5N1 has caused mortality in nearly 60 species of wild birds in Asia and now Europe. While there are no reported cases of humans becoming infected from migratory birds, humans have become infected through contact with domestic poultry.

Biosecurity for the Birds

An outbreak of a bird disease such as Exotic Newcastle Disease or Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza could not only harm your birds, it could kill other nearby birds and quickly spread through your flock. In order to prevent such an outbreak, USDA, in cooperation with States, has begun a campaign to promote avian health by encouraging bird owners 'to report sick or suspicious birds to your veterinarian, and/or extension agent and to practice good biosecurity'.

Q. What is avian influenza?

A. Avian influenza (AI) is a disease found among poultry. AI viruses can be classified into low pathogenicity and highly pathogenic forms based on the severity of the illness they cause in poultry. Most AI strains are classified as low pathogenicity avian influenza (LPAI) and cause few clinical signs in infected birds. In contrast, high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) causes a severe and extremely contagious illness and death among infected birds.
